Departmental News: Winter 2006

Winter 2006

  • Ph.D. students Medha Kamat and Hui Zhao were awarded Graduate School Dissertation Fellowships. These awards are quite competitive and for the Department to get two of them is yet another reflection on the quality of our research students.
  • Grants: Professor Alexei Demchenko received confirmation that his NIH R15 AREA grant will be funded (he now has AHA, NIH and NSF). Professors Keith Stein (PI) and Alexei Demchenko (Co-PI) also received notice that their NIH R21 Exploratory research grant will be funded.
  • Awards: Colin White won the research poster competition at the UMSL graduate fair with a poster entitled "Activation of Group 14-Hydrogen bonds with Pt-Phosphine Complexes". Second place was awarded to Ngamjit Praingam with a poster entitled "The Effect of Phosphine on SiH Bond Activation Reactions with Pt Complexes". Both students are advised by Janet Wilking and Joyce Corey.
  • UMSL Chemist 2005 is now available on the web.
  • An Alumni Reception will be held on April 7, 7:00 to 10:00 pm in the Alumni Center. We expect that most of the faculty members will be in attendance including Chancellor Thomas F. George. We would love to see you there! Please call Michelle Haley at 526-5311 if you plan to attend.
  • James S. Chickos will receive the 37th St. Louis Award of the St. Louis Section of the American Chemical Society at the St. Louis Award Banquet to be held at Kemoll's Restaurant on Saturday evening, April 22. Jim will be honored in a symposium held in the department of chemistry on Friday April 21. Details of the Symposium.
  • The 19th Annual Alumni Lecture will be given on Monday May, 1 by Professor Alicia M. Beatty, BS 1989. Alicia, who received her Ph.D degree at Washington University and had been at Kansas State University and Notre Dame, is in her second year at Mississippi State University in Starkville MS.
  •  The Ninth Robert W. Murray Lecture was presented by Fredric M. Menger, Charles Howard Candler Professor of Organic Chemistry at Emory University on March 7th, 2005. He spoke on: An Alternative View of Enzyme Action.
  • The department has hired an organic chemist, a replacement for Professor F. Christopher Pigge who left this past summer to take a position at the University of Iowa. Dr. Eike B. Baur who received his Ph.D. degree at the University of Erlangen - Nuremberg in Germany with John Gladysz, and did postdoctoral research with Keith Hollis at the University of California-Riverside. He is currently a Visiting Assistant Professor at Illinois Wesleyan University.
  • Alexei Demchenko recently received a CAREER award from the National Science Foundation for his project "Stereocontrolled synthesis of 1,2-cis glycosides" and a grant from the American Heart Association for his project "Synthesis and evaluation of novel lipid-A derivatives".
